(1810-1871)
Today, Ferdinand David is probably mostly know for his Trombone-concerto, that he wrote in 1837. Since this piece is the standard piece for trombone-auditions in Orchestras, all over the world, all trombone-players know it by heart.
The fact that Mendelssohn appointed him personally as the Konzert-meister of the Gewand-Haus Orchestra in Leipzig, undermines the assumption that he was then (1835) one of Europe’s best violinists.
In his later years he devoted himself thoroughly for teaching violin-playing, and his written violin-school is often, still today, regarded as “the Bible" of romantic violin-playing.
He composed about 50 bigger works, most of them for violin and Orchestra or Piano,
but also the aforementioned Trombone-Concerto, a Bassoon-Concerto, a Clarinet-Concerto and some Lieder.
