Mel Tormé was certainly one of the better singers during the “song-era”. Early on he earned himself the nickname “velvet-fog”, wich describes his singing pretty much spot-on. He never became the legend as the “big boys”, although he was the much better singer. Maybe he was too nice. In his mid-career he did some amazing stuff with his companion Marty Paich.
